A MERRILL CHRISTMAS FOR OSMOND FANS
MARTIN FREEMAN
11:50 - 16 October 2006
Hold on to your crazy horses, Osmonds fans: Merrill is coming to celebrate Christmas with you in Plymouth. The lead singer of the Seventies family band is joining easy listening favourite Peter Grant for Plymouth Pavilions' Spirit of Christmas show.

But you'll have to be quick - some Osmonds fans have already booked tickets for every show in the nine-night run.

Merrill's hits with his brothers included One Bad Apple, Down by the Lazy River, Love Me for a Reason and Crazy Horses.

In collaboration with his brothers - including Jimmy and Donny - Merrill wrote the music and lyrics for five No 1 hit records and he sang lead to the group's collective 27 gold records. The Osmond family has produced 47 platinum and gold records. They hold the record (11) for the number of gold awards in one year. Merrill is now an established solo artist and he has recently completed two successful European tours and a sold out concert in Wales.

Pavilions spokesman Robert Maltby believes the Osmond factor will be a bid draw. He said: "This is fantastic news to secure Merrill as the lead for Spirit of Christmas.

"The word about Merrill's appearance has already spread amongst the Osmond fan base - as we know they still have a huge following today and we have already had customers booking up front row seats to get to see their idol, some have even booked a seat for every night, a total of nine performances!" Spirit of Christmas promises to be a seasonal spectacular with high-kicking chorus girls in a glittering, all-singing, all-dancing production.

Broadway singers and dancers will bring a touch of New York style to the Pavilions from December 18 to Christmas Eve. The songs include White Christmas, Happy Holiday and Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

For children there will be Santa's workshop with the toys coming to life, plus Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Christmas Carol land and Frosty the snowman.

To book, call the box office on 0845 146 1460.

MERRILL'S FAMILY BUSINESS

Just being a member of his famous family guarantees Merrill Osmond his fair share of adoration. The 1970s equivalent of Westlife or McFly, with the added quirk of all being siblings and hailing from the other side of the Atlantic, The Osmonds were teen pin-ups of the decade - and more than 30 years on Merrill alone is getting a million hits a month on his website.

They may all be a trifle older, but the musical legacy of the brothers - not forgetting sister Marie - lives on into the 21st century. And Merrill's latest exploits bring him to the Westcountry this month to star in the Plymouth Pavilions festive extravaganza The Spirit of Christmas.

The Plymouth production runs right up to Christmas Eve, and this will be the first time Merrill and his wife, Mary, will be leaving their own six adult children, their partners and offspring - not to mention the vast extended Osmond clan - to celebrate Christmas and New Year in England.

"I will miss them all, but Mary and I have been married for 33 years, and it will be great to spend some time with her. And we have lots of friends in England, too," says Merrill, 53, who was the first Osmond brother to wed at the age of 19, breaking a lot of teenage hearts. "We were young," he admits. "But thank goodness I found the right gal."

After years in the business, Merrill is loyal to his fans.

He said: "I make a point of reading as many fan letters as I can, and it is humbling to realise how much our music means to people and even how it has shaped their lives."

The Spirit of Christmas show promises a solid core of seasonal songs from years gone by like White Christmas, Happy Holiday and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - but Merrill will not know exactly which songs he is singing until he arrives in England.

The show runs at Plymouth Pavilions from December 18 to 24. Tickets cost £19.50, £17.50 or £14.50 (December 18 all tickets £14). To book call 0845 146 1460 or visit www.plymouthpavilions.com
