Merrill Osmond to be Held “Hostage” for Charity
- For the Journal
By Sara Post Lee Merrill Osmond, of Utah’s famous Osmond Brothers, will be “incarcerated” in a dog kennel at the P.A.W.S. 5th annual Home 4 The Holidays event on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the St. George Animal Shelter located at 605 Red Hills Parkway in St. George. The event is from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., but Merrill may be released early if community support is strong, so come before 1 p.m. to meet Merrill and help “free” him from his cage. The “demands” for Merrill’s release are either 12 homeless dogs and cats are adopted from the shelter, or $12,000 is raised to help homeless animals in S.W. Utah. Merrill is flying down from his show in Reno Nev., to show his support for P.A.W.S. and this event, and he has generously agreed to stay in the dog kennel until the demands are met. He is taking part in the event hoping to boost adoptions and raise funds for the animals. This year’s event promises to be lots of fun, and it features the following activities: * Professional photos of your pet with Santa for $10 (two 4X6 prints). * Professional photos of you with Merrill Osmond for $15 (two 4X6 prints) … and maybe he’ll sing for you too! * Arts and crafts booths (get a start on your Christmas shopping). * Bake-sale booths featuring holiday goodies. * Refreshment booths with hot dogs and sodas. * Vendor booths selling pet-related toys, food, services, and more. * Beautiful and loving dogs and cats ready for adoption. * Information about how you can help homeless animals in Utah. P.A.W. S. (Providing Animals With Support) is a local, no-kill, all-volunteer animal rescue group. It does not have a shelter, but instead works with local city shelters to find homes for as many dogs and cats as possible before they are euthanized. Even with the best efforts of P.A.W.S. and other local rescue groups, most animals cannot be saved from euthanization, because there is a shortage of foster and adoptive homes. For this reason, P.A.W.S. holds their annual Homes 4 The Holidays event every year, hoping to highlight the plight of many adoptable, homeless animals that crowd every local shelter, and find them homes for Christmas. Every dollar donated to P.A.W.S. goes directly to animal welfare, mostly for spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and medical care. All donations, whether private or corporate, are tax-deductible. Last year, P.A.W.S. saved the lives of more than 400 animals and found them loving adoptive homes. P.A.W.S. and Merrill Osmond are hoping to do even better this year.
